5 years ago, my friend Phil became a realtor. At the time, I had been working on the web for several years and was unable to dodge the the inevitable question — "Can you build me a web site?".

With no option but to comply, I set to work on building a site for Phil in HTML. No problem, I thought... How bad could it be?

For those of you who have managed your own real-estate listings in HTML, you know exactly how bad it can be. Every time Phil got a new listing, I had to resize and optimize all of the images in Photoshop, FTP them to the web site, write new a new web page for the new listing, and write a new web page for every photo for the new listing... and let's not forget having to update all of the indexes and lists that pointed to the listing (the home page, the "for sale" page, the "specials" page...).

(For those of you who hire someone to manage your listings every time they change, you understand why it's so costly and time consuming.)

For me, all that coding was exhausting, so I set about finding a better way — a smarter way to do this. So TheSmartList.com was born. The tools that I built for Phil to manage his own web site have saved me from ever having to publish another real estate listing in HTML. And with Phil as my guinea pig, I was able to create tools that even a child (or Phil) could use, without ever having to call me for help.
